Bending to South Bend

Updated: Feb 9, 2022

It's crazy to think that just a few months ago, I was a high school senior, living at home in sunny Corona, California, working out every day with my friends, and imagining what life in South Bend would be like. Now, here I am, living 2,067 miles from home, braving the cold, snowy winter of Indiana, managing a college course load, and preparing to play Notre Dame football. When I was a kid, I knew that football was going to be a large part of my life. What I didn't know was that Notre Dame would be my home. Making the decision to attend this prestigious institution was difficult, but I am so glad I did. As a student-athlete, I am reminded, daily, that my education in the classroom is paramount. It is the catalyst that has allowed me to play the game I love at the BEST university in the country.

Reflecting on what I was going to write for this blog, I thought about what I would have wanted and needed to hear as a young, budding football player. I have 10 Rules of Engagement that I live by. They guide my choices and help me navigate the decisions of life. They were instilled in me by my parents, and I realize, now, that they are meant to help me be my very best, on and off the field. My accomplishments in football are plentiful, but what I am most proud of is that I have been able to stay my parent's son in everything that I do. My hope is that whoever is reading this, is inspired and encouraged by these, my 10 Rules of Engagement.

ROE#1: Early is on time. On time is late. Late is unacceptable.

ROE#2: Your word is your bond.

ROE#3: Outwork everyone. First In, Last Out.

ROE#4: Stay humble.

ROE#5: Play like today is your last. Study as though you will live a lifetime.

ROE#6: No excuses! ROE#7: Give back.

ROE#8: To whom much is given, much is required.

ROE#9: Treat others the way you want to be treated.

ROE#10: Face your fears head-on.
